The quote linked to, if anyone bothered to read it, was a statement about feminism.. And I was responding to someone’s continual posting of narratives about what “second-wave feminism” (a term I dispute anyway) is or does without any obvious engagement with actual second wave feminists. You can have any kind of sex. I just don’t want you to shut down conversations about the presence of patriarchal domination in sex by saying I’m denying your agency or some shit like that. I am completely neutral, on feminist grounds, as to your actual sexual practice. But I am violating tumblr rules obviously by being serious, so I shall now retreat.Ladyfriends, I understand we are being facetious here, but my point precisely is that this is not about guilt. it is not about who buys into the patriarchy more than others. It is about not denying the existence of patriarchy in service of pleasure.(via subjecttochange)
You can only watch wild animal sex via the National Geographic Channel.
You can’t have any.
But can I still watch porn?
I guess what I’m having trouble with is the idea that disagreeing=attempting to shut down conversations rather than providing another dimension to the conversation by adding a different perspective. I don’t think clarifying and being more specific about what one means is against Tumblr rules, but implying that someone with a different perspective is just poorly-read seems unfair.
I agree that second wave feminism is not a good term and that there were many positions within it. But Catherine MacKinnon is not a straw woman. She’s real, and she really said what she said. There were horrific fights about this. I don’t think that you can say that anti-antiporn feminists, who made a very similar argument to the one quoted and made it in the 80s, were misrepresenting what was going on. (And I know you didn’t actually say this here, but from your previous posts it seems that your position is much more aligned with, if not exactly the same as, Macinnon’s, rather than Gayle Rubin et al.) And I’m sorry but I have to go now.
